Question 1
A decent thriller has to have three important things enigma, action and suspense. To create our thriller we must include short fast takes to help create attention grabbing action, an appealing locations to have the audience grippe, a antagonist and an protagonist to help insure binary oppositions and finally a carefully considered out twisting plot. Once all the fundamentals are created, the finished productwould speak for itself. A very popular thriller Casino Royale included all the key standard and has a growth of $594,239,066 worldwide since its release in 2006, making it the fourth highest grossing film in 2006 and out of all the instalment of the James Bond series
Pushed To The Edge
- When planning for our thriller we wanted to first choose the location of where we were going to shoot our product because it was important for it to connect to our thriller theme.
- The graveyard scenes fitted with our thriller genre flawlessly because it gave a creepy atmosphere and gave little clues in why the character was there.
- Choosing the location for the cliff edge was hard because there was fencing everywhere we looked but eventually we found a place which was perfect.
- It was very important to us to get the beach scenes and the cliff scenes right because the beach scenes was the protagonists flashbacks while the cliff scenes was the protagonist present. We were trying to put together a difference between the past and the present. The beach was the perfect place in doing this because it is a fun and happy place to be.
- When using mise en scene in our opening we decided dressing the protagonist in dark clothing which reflected what she was feeling. The mood she’s in is depressed but also she’s in a dark place because of what has happened to her. When dressing them for the beach scene we certain in having both of them in skirts because they are young and happy.
- We have a canted shot of when the character is on the cliff; we thought it was a good idea in having it canted because it shows the character feeling confused and disorientated.
- The reason why we have no dialogue in our opening was so the audience could sympathize with the characters and especially with the protagonist as she feels isolated and confused.
- Our thriller opening is a teen drama and it was very important for us to put across our characters social backgrounds and ages as it helps to show the contrast in the opening. Since this is like a teen drama, betrayal is always there between young people.
- The two images of the flashback scene, we dressed them in casual clothes showing that they are just like any other young teenager and how they enjoy in having fun
- We decided to have them on the beach because you can do what you want on the beach and most teenager love being at the beach. We could have had them at the park but we all thought beach was better to film.
- The girls were eating chips between themselves which shows that they don’t have much money but enough. This also means that they don’t come from the richest background but not the poorest. Plus everybody eats chips which show they are no different from anybody else.
- When filming them on the beach, we didn't want their face to show because we wanted to keep their identity a sceret until for later on. It was hard trying to keep the wind from blowing the hair off the face but we managed to keep their face hidden as much as we could do.
- The character Chantelle is wearing a dark coat and jeans. For her having a dark coat on just implies that she is depressed due to her friends death. Since people wear black to funerals we thought we should just let her wear dark clothes.
- We didnt want to show Chantelles face until the end which we said was going to be a big close up so that we can see her facial expression. This way we can see what she might be feeling. During when we have her at a close up there is cuts between to show the flashbacks of her best friend who's face we can also see.
By the way they are clothed we wanted to portray they are lower classed and likely to be involved in gangs which could lead to their death
Our film is targeted at teenager so hopefully they can relate to this.
We tried to present Chantelle our protagonist as being mysterious but confused to help convey her characteristics. Due to the fact she is depressed she not in the right mind so we thought we should use rain as a pathetic fallacy when she is walking down the path to her friends grave. Also with her walking slow it shows she doesn't care and she'd take her time.
Due to the fact that they are young like any other teenager, there would be betrayal as any other teen girls would betray same way or another. Chantelle betrays Lacey her best friend and we didn't want the audience to hate her, we wanted the audience to feel Chantelles pain and sympathize for her.
By using video tutorials we wanted to create Lacey being trapped with cuts and bruises on her face and arms to make it look more realistic. By doing this it just seemedmore real because if we had her with no cuts thats not how it is in real life.
Question 3
When we finished our opening for our thriller 'Pushed To The Edge' we though it had all the ingredients to make the perfect thriller because there is quick paced cuts and is filled with gripping action where the audience would want to know more. So we had to think where our opening would be shown best, I believe it would be best for it to be shown in a cinema because it would grip the audience to their edge of their seats by them wanting more.
It would be very popular for it to be shown because teenagers would go to watch it and if it was to be viewed on a huge screen you would get full effect. I asked some of the audience and 65% also thought it would be best for it to be shown on the big screen however 35% thought they would just wait until it is on DVD.
Film Distributors Question 4
- I feel that our thriller is aimed at 11-36, young aduls and teenager would probably enjoy it because they would be able to relate to the characters.
- Even though both our main characters are female, I believe it is also aimed at males as well as females because of what our storyline is about.
- Because of our storyline, our characters Lacey and Chantelle are in a situation where any teenager would be at their age. So it is very realistic and relateable.
I asked the audience what they thought of our thriller and having the main characters being female "When I watched the clip I thought that it was great to see two of the main characters were female because it shows that females can do what males can."- Leslie Cortez
Question 5
Reason why the audience would enjoy our thriller
We carefully discussed what we wanted our thriller to be so that it could attract the audience and for them to be able to relate to. We could of had two males play the lead roles but we thought it best for it to be two females instead because you don't normally see it.
The storyline is about two girls who get involved with a gang and drug dealing and how it effects their life. We really believed that people would understand this and be able to enjoy watching.
The use of camerawork throughtout is mainly a mixture of close ups and long shots for example close ups of the graveyard and the flowers. Also the identity of the character is a close up because when revelaing their identity we wanted the audience to be in suspense for when they saw their face.
We had hand held shots which gives the idea that the audience can be there with them through their journey.
Throughout the opening the story is told with falshbacks of the two girls being all happy and enjoying life and then reality of what life is like without of one of them. Between girls they have very strong friendship and bond so girls can relate to this. We used sound effects of the laughter of the girls and crashing waves on the beach.

Close Up appearance of Chantelle and the emotion she has on her face showing emptiness

Fatima - my apologies if this was posted by the draft deadline - I must have not seen it somehow.
ReplyDeleteComments below - let me know tomorrow how you are getting on for the deadline.
Q1 this needs a lot more specific detail using the screen grabs (number them and actively use them as illustration throughout). You need to discuss the aims of a thriller and the techniques used in thrillers, with precise evidence and example, and precise discussion of camera, mise en scene, sound and editing. This question should be around 2 pages worth of text + images. Use terms.
Q2there is some dicussion here of the representation of youth, but this needs more precise discussion about why the nature of representation matters, and some acknowledgement on your part that you know you are constructing a representation of youth. You need to explain the detail of how and why. YOu also need to discuss the representation of femininity - is this modern or traditional, and why? And how? Again, lots of detail needed, with lots of illustration.
Q3 this is not answered at all. What about the material in the lesson given by Andrew? You are supposed to do independent work here to find out yourself how a British low budget thriller would be distributed, and you need to show that you understand the whole system of film production. Look at the links on my blog as a start, and Andrew's lesson notes. Lots more work needed here!
Q 4 and 5 - these both need much more precise definition of audience. It's not convincing that such a product would target young males, and you would need to explain very carefully how you attracted them in q 5. This all needs much more thorough work, with much more effort to answer the questions. It's disappointing that you didn't expect to do more work than this for the draft. Now you'll need to work really hard before the end of tomorrow to finish it. Where are qn 6 and 7????
